Every business that wants to sell a product or service must adhere to the guidelines. This will lead to better market positioning and improved product or service quality.
In accordance with the Secretariat of Economy's General Organization Manual, the General Standards Office is responsible for coordinating the standardization system and conformity assessment, based on the provisions of the Federal Law on Metrology and Standardization and its Regulations, to encourage the competitiveness of industry and trade in the national and international arena.
Some of its functions are:
1. To formulate, review, issue, modify, cancel and diffuse Official Mexican Standards and Mexican Standards, and define the date they come into effect.
2. To constitute, organize and preside over the National Advisory Committee on Standardization for the creation of official standards.
3. To register, verify and monitor national standardization organizations and, where appropriate, participate in their governing bodies, and suspend and cancel their registration.
4. To code Official Mexican Standards, Mexican Standards, foreign and international standards according to subject matter, keep an inventory and collection of these, and establish and operate the information service.
5. To authorize the use of passwords and official brands and, where appropriate, grant licenses for the use of those brands under the terms of the Federal Law on Metrology and Standardization and its Regulations.
6. To coordinate and supervise the National Accreditation System of Testing Laboratories and the National Calibration System and participate in them.
7. To participate in agreements with foreign and international official institutions for the mutual acknowledgment of the conformity assessment.

The Made in Mexico logo is a distinction established by the Federal Government through the Secretariat of Economy, to distinguish those products made in Mexico from foreign-made products. The objective is to strengthen the domestic market, enhance the competitiveness of national products and boost the product consumption.
Those individuals with business activities and legal entities (businesses) which produce, create, and/or manufacture products on national territory may request, at no charge, the authorization to use the "Made in Mexico" logo.

1. Visit the service counter of the General Standards Office, or the Regional or Local Office of the Secretariat of Economy nearest to your home to get your free application of the form for authorization to use the "Made in Mexico" logo. Or just download it here.
2. Fill out the form (typed or in block letters) with the information and attach the relevant documents. The form indicates you which documents you need to copy and attach.
3. Hand in the form and the attached documents to the service counter of the relevant regional or local office, or to the General Standards Office. You will receive a receipt.
4. Regardless of how the application is submitted, through the Made in Mexico website or directly over the counter, the Secretariat of Economy will respond to you in no more than 5 working days (counting from the day after the day you submitted the application), to the email address you gave on the form.
5. If, within 3 working days after receiving the application for authorization, the Secretariat of Economy detects that the information or the documentation is incomplete or incorrect, a request may be sent to you, which you should respond to within 5 working days of the date you were notified. If you do not respond within that time, your application will be discarded, but you may submit a new one later.
6. Once you have obtained the authorization, use your user account and password to enter the Made in Mexico web site http://www.hechoenmexico.gob.mx where you can download the logo file and the Graphic Identity Manual.

Aware of the importance of making information related to services, procedures and requirements for the knowledge of the public, the Secretariat of Economy provides tools for electronic consultation. This is an effort towards transparency and legal certainty to the benefit of the general public.
Each procedure will allow people having access to the following information: name; legal basis; how procedures should be submitted (written or free format); form (in which case, the date of publication in the Official Gazette of the Federation must be included); data and documents it should contain or which should be attached; maximum response time; amount payable for duties or uses; validity of permits (licenses, authorizations, registrations and other solutions which are issued); administrative units to which the procedure should be submitted; public opening times, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail or address.

The Sectorial Program of Economy 2007-2012 incorporates the priorities, objectives and strategies which guide the performance of the SE, based on the analysis of challenges and opportunities facing the country.
The Secretariatof Economy is responsible for its integration, and it is aligned with the major objectives proposed in the National Development Plan 2007-2012, on the subject. In order to strengthen actions to further economic growth and the welfare of Mexican families, a little over a year ago, the Secretariat of Economy defined six strategic objectives proposed by President Felipe Calderón in the National Development Plan 2007-2012. Since then, we have made progress in each one. We have achieved specific results which put us on the right path towards development.
The first objective was to promote competition in the national economy. We worked alongside Congress to define one of the most important structural reforms of the decade, by enacting changes to the Federal Law of Economic Competition. These changes will enhance the capacity of the authority to guarantee more efficient and competitive markets which encourage consumer welfare, innovation in companies and economic growth.
The second objective seeks to accelerate regulatory reform. This year we have continued to work on facilitating business transactions and reducing the costs of operating a business. We have already eliminated 16,174 standards and 2,257 processes and services. These actions have prompted the World Bank to rank Mexico as the best Latin American country for doing business.
Our third objective is to strengthen the domestic market. To do that, we have duplicated efforts in support of the small and medium-sized business, through greater access to credit and training. With the progress made last year, we have already triggered more than six times more credits than in the previous six-year term. We have also strengthened productive chain schemes in the private sector and government purchases, to the benefit of smaller firms.
To raise competitiveness, the fourth strategy is to promote business innovation. In recent months we have encouraged scientific research and technological development in the production sector. Based on a new legal framework and a more efficient use of funds earmarked for innovation, we are creating a closer link between academia and the business sector.
Our fifth strategy is to strengthen consumer rights. Last year we targeted resources to reinforce the infrastructure of consumer service and the observance of consumer rights. In addition, we launched new schemes to foster a smart-consumer culture, and we were able to strengthen consumer defense instruments through collective actions and better support of consumer organizations.
Finally, we made progress in the sixth strategy to consolidate Mexico as a global export power and investment destination. To achieve that, we pushed the economic integration of Mexico on the continent to raise our competitiveness and establish us as the bridge between Latin America and the North American region. We deepened our Free Trade Agreement with Colombia; reached a solution to the trucking conflict with the United States; and were endorsed as the second largest recipient of foreign investment in Latin America.
These important advances and their impact on the well-being of families fill us with enthusiasm. Nevertheless, we know that they are still not enough. Our country needs to continue to progress to forge the prosperous and equitable society that the Mexican people deserve. President Calderón is, therefore, doubling efforts for the future, to continue to build a more competitive economy and a stronger Mexico for the benefit of all.
